Early years foundation stage
What is the EYFS?
The EYFS describes how early years practitioners should work with both your children and you to support their development and learning
It describes how your child should be kept safe and cared for and how everyone can make sure that your child achieves as much as they can in their earliest years of life
It is based on four important points
Info for Parents
What are the EYFS points?
A Unique Child – every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
Positive Relationships – children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person
Enabling Environments – the environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning
Learning and Development – children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of learning and development are equally important and interconnected
Why is the EYFS important?
The EYFS is the stage your child is in when they attend a childcare setting between birth and the age of five. It continues until the end of Reception year at school
Children do best when parents and professionals work together for their development
We know that you know more about your own child than anyone else. So we will always ask you about your child and will always share information with you about your child’s progress
The more you know about what your child is doing when they are with others, the more you will know about how well they are developing and learning
You play an enormous part in their learning and the choices you make now make a big difference to their future
What can you do?
You are your child’s first teacher. When they are with you learning happens all the time in everything you do together. For example:
Playing games, singing nursery rhymes
Counting things like cars going past
Reading things together
Talking about things you can see when you are out and about
Giving lots of praise, encouragement and of course cuddles
Why are the years 0 – 5 so special?
The years up to 5 are when your child grows and learns the most. This is when they learn key things that shape who they are:
Safety and being secure
Mental and physical wellbeing
How to be successful
Learning during the early years is the most important factor in your child’s future and you and your family make the greatest difference right now.
